(4) Audience: research groups working in the field; (if applicable)

The primary objective of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from fields of Knowledge Engineering and Software Engineering. Number of research groups in Europe work in the KESE field.

The principal focus of the Workshop is on methods of Knowledge Engineering rooted in the symbolic logic-based representations and their novel applications in Software Engineering. Moreover, a synergistic use and development of these KE methods together with recent formalized and declarative SE methods, including Model Driven Architecture and Development, ontological modelling as well as Business Process modelling is emphasized. Finally, the studies of the impact of these SE methods on the classic KE development processes are welcomed.

The previous KESE Workshops have been annually organized at the German Conference on Artificial Intelligence (KI) since 2005. In 2011 the seventh workshop on Knowledge Engineering and Software Engineering (KESE7) was held at the Conference of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAEPIA 2011) in Spain. Expected number of submissions.

We expect from 10 to 16 submissions. Previous editions of KESE brought together from 20 to 30 participants. In 2009 KESE was the largest workshop on the KI conference.

(5) One paragraph about each organizer (scientific profile, previous events you have organized).

G. J. Nalepa, AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow gjn@agh.edu.pl, http://home.agh.edu.pl/gjn holds a position of assistant professor in Computer Science Lab in Institute of Automatics. Since 1995 he has been involved in number of research projects. He has co/authored over 100 publications, from the domains of knowledge engineering, intelligent systems and software engineering. He formulated a new design approach for rules called XTT (eXtended Tabular Trees). He has been involved in over 20 conferences and workshops. Since 2008 he's been co-organizing the Knowledge and Software Engineering Workshop (KESE) at KI, the German AI conference. He is the President of the Polish Artificial Intelligence Society (PSSI) http://pssi.agh.edu.pl.

J. Cañadas, University of Almeria jjcanada@ual.es Joaquín Cañadas is assistant lecturer of software engineering in the Department of Languages and Computation at the University of Almeria, Spain. His research interests are knowledge modeling, model-driven development and Web-based decision support systems. He currently pursues his PhD on these topics. In 2011 he was co-organizer of the seventh edition of the Knowledge Engineering and Software Engineering Workshop (KESE7), acting as a reviewer for that workshop since 2006.

Baumeister, University Würzburg joba@uni-wuerzburg.de Dr. Joachim Baumeister is Senior Consultant at the denkbares GmbH and gives lectures at the University of Würzburg, Germany, where he also received his PhD in 2004. His research focuses on semantic technologies and practical knowledge engineering such as continuous knowledge formalization, advanced evaluation and refactoring methods. He is regularly serving as a reviewer for international conferences (K-CAP, KPAW, PAIS) and journals, and he actively contributes to current research themes which is documented by more than 70 referred publications. For about 10 years he is working in and coordinating industrial research projects, mainly in the medical area, but also in the biological and technical domain.

Aims and Scope

Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) have been successfully developed in various domains based on techniques and tools from Knowledge Engineering (KE). The classic KE approach to system modelling uses mostly symbolic logic-based symbolic knowledge representation methods, which are more specific from Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a broad sense, that has recently included computational intelligence techniques. Since most of the implementations of today KBS are software based, Software Engineering (SE) methods and tools play an important role in their development. Moreover, recent developments in SE emphasize the importance of the use of formalized symbolic representations in the software development process.

This stimulates the synergy between KE methods and SE methods and tools. Thus, declarative software engineering techniques have been established in many areas, such as knowledge systems, logic programming, constraint programming, and lately in the context of the Semantic Web, business rules as well as business processes.

The primary objective of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from fields of KE and SE. Moreover the workshop endeavors to promote the use of KE techniques in SE problems, where significant benefits can be derived from their use. The general goal of the workshop is to show how the KE techniques can provide practical solutions in Software Engineering issues. On the other hand influence of SE methods and tools on the practical design of KBS within KE.

Moreover, a synergistic use and development of these KE methods together with recent formalized and declarative SE methods, including Model Driven Architecture and Development, ontological modelling as well as Business Process modelling is emphasized. Finally, the studies of the impact of these SE methods on the classic KE development processes are welcomed. The intention is to give ample space for exchanging latest research results as well as knowledge about practical experience.

The previous KESE Workshops have been annually organized at the German Conference on Artificial Intelligence (KI) since 2005. In 2011 the seventh workshop on Knowledge Engineering and Software Engineering (KESE7) was held at the Conference of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAEPIA 2011) in Spain.

Topics of Interest

Topics of the workshop are generally related to the applications of symbolic KE techniques in SE as well as the use of KE in the SE practice.

Intended Audience

We expect researchers and practitioners from the areas of KE and SE. The focus is on KE methods using symbolic logic-based representations, and a synergy between them and formalized and declarative SE methods

Novel, innovative approaches and applications are appreciated. No limitation on the number of participants is planned.

Papers should be formatted according to the Springer LNCS guidelines. The length of each paper should not exceed 10 pages (including figures and references), see: http://ftp.springer.de/pub/tex/latex/llncs/latex2e/llncs2e.zip All papers must be written in English and submitted in PDF format. Submissions will be made via EasyChair.

Call for Tool Presentations

This year we also strongly encourage the submission of tool presentation papers, i.e., system descriptions that clearly show the interaction between research and practice. Such papers have to be explicitly identified as tool presentation.

Organization

The one-day workshop will be held with presentations of accepted papers. English is the official language of the workshop. The submitted papers will be reviewed by three members of the program committee. A comfortable time slot for discussions will be given. Accepted contributions will appear as CEUR Workshop Proceedings (CEUR-WS.org).
